Books of 2018- Installment #13

61. Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
I had heard so much positive publicity for this book that I was so excited once my library hold game in. It's basically a dystopian supernatural story set on what will be left of the Navajo reservation after the great floods brought on by climate change. All kinds of wars have broken out in the aftermath of climate change. That's the backdrop, not the story itself. It centers around Maggie Hoskie, monsterslayer. She's a badass forged in the fires of some really nasty shit. But she's trying to do right and save as many people, herself included, as possible. All I can really say is I love her. She reminds me of Charlie Davidson and Buffy Summers and is also completely herself. I didn't realize this book was going to be the first in a series when I got, but I am thrilled I get to keep visiting her.

62. Ashes of Honor by Seanan McGuire
Oh, October Daye! What can I say? I tried to read a couple of books after the wonderful Trail of Lightning and neither appealed. But I had Ashes of Honor sitting on my shelf waiting ever so patiently to be read. And lo! I picked up and read it and was thrilled! Thank you, Seanan McGuire! You rock!!

63. I Hope My Voice Doesn't Skip by Alicia Cook
I saw this book at a Barnes and Noble and had to pick it up. It sat on my shelf for a long time before I picked it up. Sometimes I think we know a book needs to be read by us even if the timing isn't right. I don't know if the timing was right when I bought it or not, but I am glad I read it. I like her voice and her themes.

64. The Only Harmless Great Thing by Brooke Bolander
I hadn't wanted to read this book. The title is unsettling and the cover is disturbing. But people kept praising it and praising it, so I felt I had to check it out. I was right. It is upsetting, and like many upsetting things, it was good for me to read.

65. Palimpsest by Catherynne M. Valente
This book has sat on my shelf waiting for me to pick it up and read it. Once I picked it up and actually cracked it open, it grabbed me. It's fascinating how this book has affected me. I find myself drawing for each chapter. I have never wanted to draw this much because of a book. This book needs to be illustrated!!! I of course am not up to the task, but I still felt compelled to draw!! Click here if you want to see my less than awesome drawings. They made me happy, even if I'm the only one who likes them! :)
